Recently, the US Coast Guard has revealed the first-ever images of the OceanGate’s Titan submersible implosion. The image depicts the tail of the Vessel embedded in the ocean at a depth of 12,500 feet in the Atlantic Ocean!

According to the Coast Guard, this image was “conclusive evidence of a catastrophic loss”.

What Happened to the OceanGate Titan Submersible that led to its Implosion?

If we recall, on June 18, 2023, the Titan Submersible lost all communication with its support ship, the Polar Prince. After much searching, on June 22, 2023, an ROV located the cone tail of the Titan Submersible. This led to the conclusion that the submersible had been destroyed.

However, before the destruction, the last communication that the crew had with the Polar Prince was “All good here”.

Although the submersible was deemed safe, it is quite surprising that the Lead engineer of OceanGate did not pilot the journey to the Titanic wreck. He told the crew, “I’m not getting into it”. He had told the crew to also not go because the submersible was “not working like we thought it would”. However, he was fired that year for refusing.

Could the OceanGate’s Titan Submersible Implosion be Avoided?

Based on the first images, yes. According to Robert Sanders, a former U.S. Navy Captain, “It’s designed as an experimental thing. They were testing new limits to do new things, but they were simultaneously using it as a commercial moneymaking venture, which was endangering the public…The public would not necessarily know the difference.”

He continued stating, “A good mariner who was safety first would be able to say, ‘I’m not going to do these additional things because right now I don’t have all the safety protocols in place.”  Moreover, “If you think about the design of submarines, generally they’re double-hulled, made out of steel, and they have specialized welding materials that put them together because of the pressure”.
