History and Heermandi
Heeramandi is a real neighborhood in Lahore. Moreover, it was established during the Mughal times. Heeramandi draws on the tales of the courtesans that have been passed down by numerous historians over the years. Additionally, it pays tribute to the convictions of the tawaifs while they fought for India’s freedom. The characters in the show reflect those of real-life people as well. Moreover, for example, the daughter of Mallikajaan reflects Azizan Bai, who was a courtesan from the Nothern Indian city of Kanpur. Likewise, she donated and supported the 1857 national uprising against the British East India Company. Sanjay Leela Bhansali has said, “Even if the world doesn’t sing their song, they have played their part in history…and they found freedom by the end of it”.
Moreover, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s version of the Heeramandi ends with the courtesans evolving in modern Indian societies. In addition, his vision was to show the angles of the Heeramandi, even if they were at times “wicked” and “charming”.
Is Heeramandi based on a true story?
Sanjay Leela Bhansalli’s version of the Heermandi is fiction. However, it is based on true historical facts. It focuses on the 1920s and how life was for the courtesans and federal lords under British rule.
